The Safety and well-being of our families and communities is only as good as our emergency preparedness and communications systems
WHCR 90.3 FM created its
Emergency Broadcast Team (WEBT) in 2012 following Superstorm Sandy in order to provide timely and accurate community-based information to the Harlem community during emergencies, and community news during normal times. WEBT utilizes its FCC-licensed mobile radio network to connect with its community radio network partners in Harlem, the Bronx and city-wide
The
Harlem Emergency & Information Network (HEN) was created as an adjunct to the WEBT network to reach out into the community to train and deploy emergency radio operators connected to the network. Since the onset of COVID-19, HEN has streamed weekly updates on the health crisis for the Harlem community
The Manhattan North Radio Network was created by the
Manhattan North District and
Digital Divide Partners to provide an emergency communications facility to service the public housing resident communities of Harlem/Northern Manhattan
Every year since Hurricane Sandy in 2012, the WHCR Emergency Broadcast Team, in partnership with Digital Divide Partners, WHCR 90.3 FM radio, CERT and others, has hosted HARLEM EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS DAY as an event to educate and inform the Harlem community about emergency preparedness and communications
Housing residents believe that they must take control of their own safety and quality-of-life in the places where they live. Created by John Johnson, President of Mott Haven Houses, the Virtual Tenant Patrol service enables resident tenant leaders and residents themselves to view their own building lobbies, front doors, playgrounds and other common areas remotely, out of harm's way
WEBT and HEN produce and stream a weekly news and information program on Monday mornings to help keep the Harlem, South Bronx and NYC communities safe and informed
Grant Houses Community Radio (GHCR) provides critical news and information to the Grant Houses resident community during emergencies. During normal times GHCR streams music and educational programming from its Community Streaming Radio Station located on their premises. GHCR streams over the free local Y-Fi network, the Internet and their own low-power FM
network
East Harlem Community Radio (EHCR) broadcasts and streams from its community-based Streaming Radio Station over the local James Weldon Johnson Houses Y-Fi and low-power FM networks, as well as the Internet. Programming is produced and controlled by residents, and during emergencies, provides critical information about local conditions
WHCR 90.3 FM, the Voice of Harlem, broadcasts and streams community-based programming from its facilities at the City College of New York. WHCR is actively engaged in the community, including its work with the WHCR Emergency Broadcast Team and the annual Harlem Emergency Preparedness Day
